About us

People in Need is a Czech organization that provides relief aid and development assistance while working to defend human rights and democratic freedom. At home, People in Need runs social integration programs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and engages in educational and informational activities. PIN is one of the largest organizations of its kind in post Communist Europe, and over the past nineteen years it has implemented projects in fifty countries.

Relief and Development Aid

People in Need has been involved in tackling humanitarian crises in more than twenty countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Besides ensuring the basic needs of living, it also focuses on developing local business as well as supporting civil society and good governance within the framework of its development projects. PIN’s largest mission comprises an integrated set of projects and programmes in Afghanistan which is now in its eleventh year. At the start of 2010, it opened a humanitarian mission in Haiti, which had been devastated by an earthquake. PIN has also helped those affected by repeated flooding in the Czech Republic, mainly by providing direct material and financial aid.

Social Integration Programmes

People in Need also helps people living in social exclusion and poverty in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It first helped out in poverty stricken areas, where it began providing social field work. In subsequent years, it expanded its services to include other activities.

Human Rights Promotion

People in Need strives to help establish civil society in countries whose inhabitants languish under the yoke of undemocratic regimes. It focuses primarily on supporting political prisoners and their families as well as human rights activists, independent journalists, and civic initiatives.

Educational and Information Programmes

People In Need’s educational programmes focus on students and teachers from Czech primary and secondary schools as well as universities. This primarily involves screening documentary films, which tie in with subsequent discussions, and methodological support. People in Need’s information programmes concentrate on the Czech public and civil service.

People in Need believes that cooperation is essential in order to contribute meaningfully to finding solutions to the world’s problems. PIN is an active partner in Alliance 2015, the Czech Forum for Development Cooperation (FoRS), the European Union Monitoring Center (EUMC), Eurostep and CONCORD. PIN is also an implementing partner of ECHO, Europe Aid, UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, IOM and many other bodies, and it is registered with USAID as an international private voluntary organization. PIN is a legally registered Czech non-profit, non-governmental organization. Its main office is located at Šafaříkova 24, Prague 2, Czech Republic.
